Flash Fiction: Do I Make a Sound?

It was her favorite place in her world: the pond behind an abandoned house in the woods. It was far away from other humans. The only sounds were birds in the trees and deers’ hooves crunching leaves.

In the quiet, she breathed. When she was here, she’d usually pull out a book or her journal from her sack, or maybe a joint that she’d packed. But today she sat there and felt as if she was waiting—for anything. In a flash of irritation, she grabbed a pebble and tossed it. It fell with a quiet plunk through the water’s surface.
